Cyprus - University of Nicosia

Why I Love Cyprus to the Moon and Back!

Alena K., International Management Studies in the Baltic Sea Region, 6th semester, Cyprus, Nicosia, University of Nicosia (UNIC), summer semester 2024

I can’t say goodbye to Cyprus because it has become a second home to me! My time studying at UNIC (University of Nicosia) has been one of the best experiences of my life. Here’s why you should consider an Erasmus exchange in Cyprus:

Notes on Search for Study or Internship

Finding a study program abroad that aligned with my interests in Marketing and Management was crucial. I always dreamed of spending a semester in a warm, vibrant country like Cyprus. Having vacationed here before, I knew I wanted to experience it as a student. The University of Nicosia (UNIC) stood out with its diverse courses and international reputation. Social media research and feedback from students at Hochschule Stralsund who studied in Cyprus helped me make my decision.

Application Process

The application process for UNIC was straightforward. I submitted my Erasmus+ application through my home university, HOST, including the grant and learning agreements, and followed UNIC’s specific requirements. This included submitting transcripts, a motivation letter, and proof of English proficiency.

Finding Accommodation

Finding accommodation was made easy by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and other student organizations in Cyprus. They posted available housing options on their Facebook groups. In less than a week, I found a great room in a shared flat with another Erasmus student. While there are student dorms in the city center, I found shared flats to be more comfortable.

Preparation

I applied a year before my semester abroad, so I had plenty of time to prepare, both mentally and with the help of information from fellow students. I was excited to enjoy the warm weather, and beautiful beaches, and start my semester in Cyprus.

Study

UNIC boasts professors from around the globe who bring diverse perspectives and give special attention to international students. The variety of subjects related to my degree (Marketing and Management) kept me engaged. The Moodle electronic portal is user-friendly, and the library is perfect for studying for exams. UNIC also offers great facilities like cafeterias, a restaurant, and a well-equipped gym.

Culture + People

Cypriots are incredibly friendly and welcoming. From university staff to the general public, everyone I met was amazing. The ESN organizes events that make international students feel included. The local Russian community and other national groups made me feel at home. Cyprus’s rich culture, traditional music, dances, and delicious local food are unforgettable. For example, delicious local food – from Souvlaki and Gyros to Cyprus pita and Bougatsa with Frappe – is something you’ll definitely love.

Religion

While Cyprus is predominantly Greek Orthodox, it has a harmonious coexistence of different religions, enriching the cultural experience.

Environment

Cyprus is blessed with beautiful nature, picturesque views, and fantastic beaches. The weather is particularly great in spring, with over 300 sunny days a year.

Infrastructure

Cyprus is quite advanced in terms of technical infrastructure, with services like car sharing and food delivery making life easier. However, public transportation is not as developed as in other European countries. There are intercity buses with student discounts that connect major cities (Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos) and sea resorts.

Language

Greek is the official language, but Cypriots speak excellent English, making it easy to adapt and communicate.

Leisure

Cyprus offers endless leisure activities, from historical sites and museums to beach days and mountain hikes. The ESN organizes regular trips and events to help international students make the most of their stay.

Tips & Tricks

  • Participate in local festivals and events to immerse yourself in Cypriot culture

Conclusion

Overall, I never felt far from home or experienced homesickness because Cyprus’s atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming. If you’re considering an Erasmus exchange, I highly recommend Cyprus. You won’t regret it – I’m 100% confident of that! I’m incredibly happy with my decision to spend a semester abroad at UNIC in Nicosia. Cyprus will always be in my heart. This isn’t goodbye – it’s see you soon! I’ll definitely be back, whether to travel or to connect my life with Cyprus.
