Financing the study programme

What you need to know about BAföG, scholarships & CO

Rent, rising living costs, excursions and so on. Student life can be expensive. Fortunately not at HOST. We do not charge tuition fees and the prices in Stralsund are also extremely moderate. Nevertheless, you should expect to pay around 10,000 euros per year. According to the 21st Social Survey of Student Services, the average student in Germany has 918 euros per month at their disposal. How you finance the amount you need is an individual matter and also varies depending on where you study. Whether BAföG, parents, scholarships or a part-time job - it's often a mixture - here you can find out how you can finance your studies.

BAföG

The Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) comes into effect if the parents' financial situation does not allow for support for the child's studies. The maximum rate for students who do not live with their parents is 992 euros from the winter semester 2024/25. As a rule, the parents' income is decisive for the amount of funding.

In order to receive BAföG, you must submit an application and adhere to the standard period of study, provide proof of successful academic achievements after the 4th semester and be under 30 years of age at the start of your studies.

BAföG is applied for at the relevant student union or BAföG office. The grant is valid for one year. Important: You must reapply every year.

Repayment begins after graduation and after starting your career. The monthly instalments depend on your future income. The good thing is that you only have to pay back half of the funding amount.

Scholarship

Numerous foundations, organisations and state funding programmes offer study grants in the form of scholarships. You don't have to have a grade point average of 1.0 and a first-class CV for this. Of course, foundations have certain expectations of their scholarship holders. But these can certainly be met.

Similar to BAföG, the amount of the scholarship is usually based on the parents' income. There are also options for book allowances or travel allowances for stays abroad.

In addition to monthly financial support, scholarship holders also benefit from non-material support, e.g. free seminars and contacts with other scholarship holders.

Take the time to find the right scholarship for you and don't be afraid to apply!

Child benefit

Your parents are entitled to child benefit until they reach the age of 25. This means that parents always receive 250 euros regardless of the number of children they have. Many parents transfer the full amount to their children. A small amount - but one that is regularly credited to the student account!

Jobbing

Many students supplement their monthly income with a part-time job. Care should be taken with the amount of additional income:

  • Health insurance companies demand higher contributions if the working hours are too high
  • BAföG is reduced from 450 euros/month
  • The BAföG supplementary income allowance is 5,400 euros/year
  • If your salary is higher, you may have to pay social security contributions such as taxes, pension and health insurance

You can find numerous part-time job offers for the Stralsund area on various job exchanges.

Student loans & Co.

You should bear in mind that not all student loans are the same! Framework conditions, interest rates and repayment modalities can vary greatly. Taking out a loan must be carefully considered. We have summarised the three most common types of loan for you:

  • Student loans offer special conditions for students. They are not tied to any collateral and are not paid out as a one-off amount as is usually the case, but in monthly instalments. Interest rates vary depending on the financial institution. Repayment is usually only made after a certain period of time following the end of your studies.
  • Tuition fee loans offer special conditions for students. They are also not tied to any collateral and, unlike student loans, are paid out once a semester in order to pay any tuition fees (in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and therefore at HOST, no tuition fees are charged). Interest rates and conditions vary depending on the financial institution and federal state.
  • You only apply foreducational loans at a later stage of your studies. This can be used, for example, to co-finance stays abroad, internship phases or the Master's programme.
Support from parents

For the majority of students, the main costs of their studies are borne by their parents. By law, parents must finance their child's first education. Depending on income, this amounts to up to 735 euros, provided the child does not live at home. However, this only applies to the standard period of study.
