Repeat examinations
A failed or deemed failed examination can be repeated twice. A final thesis that has been assessed as less than "sufficient" (4.0) can only be repeated once.
The first repeat examination must be taken no later than the third semester after the standard examination date specified in the examination regulations. A second resit is only permitted on the next regular examination date after the first resit.
If repeat examinations are not registered or not taken, they are deemed not to have been taken and the 2nd or 3rd attempt is graded with 5.0 (failed).
Exceptions:
1. If the student is on leave of absence at this time, the examination must be taken on the next date after the end of the leave of absence. If, for reasons for which they are responsible, candidates exceed the deadlines for registering for the resit examination or if they do not take examinations for which they have registered by this date at the latest for reasons for which they are responsible, the resit examination is deemed to have been failed.
2. Subject examination regulations may stipulate that stays abroad or practical semesters planned as part of the degree programme entitle students to repeat the first resit at a later date without having to apply. Please refer to your examination regulations for the specific regulations.
Note on additional attempts:
students have a total of four additional attempts (4th examination attempt) on their examinations, with the exception of the final thesis and colloquium. Only one additional attempt can be claimed per examination of a degree programme. Students must submit an informal application for an additional attempt to Department II (Office of Student Affairs) within the examination registration period of the semester in which the examination is to be taken.
Note on improvement attempts:
Students have the opportunity to improve the grade (improvement attempt) of a passed examination other than the final thesis and colloquium four times during the standard period of study; the better result of the examination counts in each case. Improvement attempts do not count as resits of examinations.
